What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are customized shells that encase a damaged, cracked, or decayed tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and overall appearance. Crafted from various materials, dental crowns offer a versatile solution for different dental concerns.
At Grants Ferry Family Dentistry, your tooth is digitally scanned and a porcelain crown is designed and fabricated in our in-office lab. Thanks to years of experience in digital design/fabrication, our team can confidently deliver your dental crowns in one appointment only.

Same Day Crowns: FAQs
-
Dental crowns remain one of the most common procedures performed in the dental office. At GFFD, we aim to make this process comfortable and efficient, even offering spa services as your crown is being fabricated.
The process is simple. First, your dentist will evaluate your tooth by taking needed radiographs and performing an exam. If determined that your tooth needs a crown, your tooth will then be prepared. This means removing the damaged portions and salvaging as much healthy tooth structure as possible, ensuring that you are comfortable and pain-free throughout the process.
The magic begins once your tooth is digitally scanned with our intra-oral scanner. With computer aided design, a crown is designed to perfectly fit your prepped tooth while preserving a natural appearance. Our industry leading Cerec mill then “cuts” your crown from a block of porcelain. Custom characterization is added to make your crown a perfect match before final crystallization in a furnace.
The finished crown is then permanently cemented on your remaining tooth to bring it back to full form and function. All in one appointment!

The traditional process of the crown procedure involves the use of physical impressions, a temporary crown, and the use of a dental lab.
If you’ve had an impression taken before, you won’t forget it! The gooey, runny, gag-reflex-stimulating substance is something we are proud to be rid of thanks to intra-oral scanning. Not to mention, the accuracy of intra-oral scanning far surpasses that of all physical impression techniques.
Temporary crowns were used in the interim time while waiting on your crown to be made at an outside lab. They tended to be weak, rough, and often de-bonded before your final crown was ready to be delivered. By eliminating the temporary crown stage, we have seen a drastic decrease in post-op sensitivity.
By incorporating a lab into our practice at GFFD, we have the ability to perfectly customize your crown and save you a second appointment. We also cut out the weeks of wait time common with the traditional method of crowns.
At GFFD, we have been utilizing same day crown technology for the last decade, leading the state of Mississippi in digital dentistry. There is no going back after experiencing the difference technology can make!

Only a full exam by your dentist, including radiographs, can definitively diagnose the need for a dental crown, but certain measures are used to determine its necessity.
Teeth with the following conditions are most often treated with dental crowns- root canal treated teeth, broken cusp (or functional portion) of a tooth, deep decay effecting more than half of the tooth, cracked teeth, teeth with excessive wear, and teeth that have large fillings that are failing/breaking down.
-
A dental crown is meant to protect a weakened tooth that may otherwise break during normal function. Your dentist may recommend a dental crown on a tooth that is asymptomatic. With the use of intra-oral photography, your dentist may point out fractures on an otherwise healthy tooth that could result in traumatic breakage if left untreated. Ultimately, placing a crown before there are obvious problems is more likely to save you from more invasive and costly procedures, such as root canals and implants.
-
Generally, a dental crown costs about $1000-$1500 each. Dental insurance, discount plans, and our in house membership plan may help reduce the cost of crowns.
We understand that the cost of crowns can be a concern. We’ll work with you to explore payment options, and our finance team can discuss financing plans to make your treatment more affordable.
-
The process of getting a crown involves the removal of tooth structure, namely the damaged portion of the tooth. Your dentist will ensure that you are comfortable and that your mouth is numb to make for a pain-free experience.
After your crown is placed, some people may experience mild sensitivity that usually resolves over the course of 1-2 weeks.
If pain or sensitivity lingers for more than 2 weeks without gradual improvement, contact your dentist as an adjustment to your crown may be needed.
